PREPOSITIONS Prepositions are words which show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun object and some other words in the sentence. They are always followed by nouns or pronouns. They are called “the biggest little words” in English because they have very important functions. It is on land now. along: forward, on. - The children are running along the main road. among: in the midst of. - There is a small hut among the trees. at: page 3 behind: in the back of, not front - He is standing behind the wall. below: under - Some of the land in their country is below sea level. beside: near, at the side of - The teacher is standing beside her table. between: in relation to two things - The supermarket is between the cinema and the post office. Their house is between two trees. - POSITION - beyond: farther - Denmark is an old Kingdom beyond the seas. by: near - The shop is by the sea. down: in a lower position - They are diving down the sea. from: starting at - Can I buy it from the grocer. in: page 3 in front of: not back and near - We can meet in front of the post office. inside: within, in - You can see them inside the museum. into: toward and within - The little boy can fall into the river. near: at a very small distance from - There is a tall building near the hospital. off: away from - They are going off the campus to have lunch.
