Grup üyeleriyle Kiss tarzı rock ve tiyatral sovlar konusunda anlaşamayınca gruptan ayrıldı. 1991'de Lordi adıyla demolar kaydetti. Grubun şuanki diğer üyeleriyle 1996 yılında Stockholm'de biraraya geldi. Grup biraraya geldikten sonra muhteşem sahne ve havai fişek sovları ve "Canavar Kostümleri" grubun değişmezi oldu. Grubun maskeli imajı plak şirketlerinden tepkiler aldı, "Maske giyecekseniz Black Metal Yapın" şeklinde söylemler oldu. Sonunda BMG recording company Lordi'yle anlaşma yaptı ve ilk albümleri olan "Get Heavy" 2002 yılında piyasaya çıktı. Bu Albüm Finlandiya'da 40.000 adet satmıştır. Canavar kostümleri parça parça geliştirildi ve bugünkü halini aldı. Putaansuu hala 1996'dan kalan parçalar olduğunu söylemiştir. Ayrıca her kostümün birkaç yüz Euro'ya mal olduğunu ve grup üyelerinin kendi makjaylarını kendilerinin yaptıklarını anlatmıştır.. Canavar kostümleri Lordi ile o kadar bütünleşmiştir ki artık kostümleri olmadan fotoğraf çektirmeyi kabul etmiyorlar.. Röportajlara bile kostümle geliyorlar.. Hiperocktif editörlerine burdan küçük bir uyarı olsun bu da Canavarlarla röportaj yapmaktan korkmayanları bekliyoruz  2006 Eurovision öncesi BBC'nin bir haberine göre havuz başında sıcağın altında şezlongda uzanırken bile kostümleri üzerlerindeydi Medyada çıkan maskesiz fotoğraflar: Grubun ve özellikle de kostümlerin çok ilgi çekmesi üzerine ilk olarak Finlandiya'da yerel bir gazete olan Ilta-Sanomat gazetesi 15 Mart 2006'da, Mr. Lordi'nin kostümsüz ve makjazsız fotoğrafını yayınladı. Mr. Lordi bunun kendileri için bir hakaret olduğunu açıkladı ve 10 yıldır oluşturmaya çalıştıkları canavar imajının medya tarafından yıkılmak istendiğini söyledi. Daha Sonra 22 mayısta Daily Mail grubun eski ve kostümsüz-makyajsız bir fotoğrafını yayınladı.Sonradan bu fotoğraftaki grubun Children of Bodom olduğu açıklandı. Açıklama ise Children of Bodom'un resmi sitesinden yapıldı. Fotoğrafta Erna Siikavirta yani Lordi'ninn klavyecisi Enary de vardı.Fakat Enary 2005'de gruptan ayrılmıştı yerine Awa gelmişti.Aynı gün bir Alman gazetesi olan Bild-Zeitung Putaansuu'nun maskesiz bir fotoğrafıyla birlikte manşete şöyle yazdı : "O bir Grand Prix Canavarı: Almanya Tüm zamanların En Çirkin Şampiyonunu Konuşuyor". Bunu bir patlama gibi diğer gazeteler izledi ve devamında da Avrupada ve Türkiyede birçok gazete ve dergi aynı fotoğrafı yayınladı. 24 Mayıs 2006 da Finlandiyalı 7 Päivää gazetesi Manşetten Mr. Lordi'nin maskesiz fotoğrafını yayınladı ardından da Katso isimli dergi diğer 4 grup elemanının maskesiz fotoğraflarını yayınladı. Fakat her ikisi de okurları tarafından ciddi eleştiriler aldılar ve Lordi'nin maskesiz fotoğraflarını bir daha yayınlamayacaklarına söz verdiler. Lordi, 2006 Eurovision Şarkı Yarışması'nda Finlandiya'yı "Hard Rock Hallelujah" isimli şarkı ile temsil etti ve 292 puanla birinci seçildi. İkinci seçilen Rusya'yı temsil etmiş olan Dima Bilan ile aralarında 44 puan vardı. Arnavutluk, Ermenistan ve Monako dışında bütün ülkelerden puan alan Lordi, Eurovision Şarkı Yarışmasında o güne kadarki en yüksek puanı almıştır. Tartışmalar Finlandiya'yı temsil etmek üzere Lordi'nin seçilmesi Almanya ve Finlandiya'da tartışmalara yol açmıştır. Finlandiya'da muhafazakar liderler Başkan Halonen'i arayıp seçimi veto etmesini istediler.Almanyada ise bazı organizasyonlar Lordi'nin Eurovision'a katılmasını engellemeye çalıştılar.Almanya Restorant ve Bar Sahiperi Derneği Başkanı Niki Constantinou basın toplantısı düzenleyerek Finlandiya ve Almanya halkına "Satanistleri O Gece Sahneye Çıkarmayın" direktifinde bulundu.Almanyadaki diğer organizasyonlar da Lordi hakkında yasal işlem başlatmak istediler. Lordi suçlamalara kendisi cevap verdi ve Satanist iddialarını şiddetle yalanladı. Satanist bir grup "Hard Rock Hallelujah" veya "Devil is a Loser" isimli parçalar yazmaz dedi. Belki tartışmalar yüzünde belki de tartışmalara rağmen Almanya finallerde Lordi'ye 12 puan verdi ki bir ülkenin verebileceği en yüksek puandır bu. Eurovision Şarkı yarışması birinciliğinin kutlamaları 26 Mayıs 2006'da Helsinki Market Square'da ücretsiz açık hava konseriyle yapıldı.Bu Konserden birkaç görüntüyü Lordi Foto Galerisinde bulabilirsiniz.Aslında grup Yarışma finallerinde kazanacakları belli olduğunda üstü kapalı olarak konserin haberini vermişti : "Torilla tavataan!" ([market] square'da görüşürüz) dediler. Konser yerel saatle 18'de başladı. Alt grupların tümü SonyBMG şirketiyle çalışan Finlandiyalı gruplardı: Kilpi, PMMP, Egotrippi and Happoradio. Lordi yerel saatle 21'de sahneye çıktı ve 6 parça çaldılar: 1- Bringing Back the Balls to Rock 2- Blood Red Sandman 3- Devil is a Loser 4- It Snows in Hell 5- Would You Love a Monsterman 6- Hard Rock Hallelujah Konserde Finlandiya başkanı Tarja Halonen, Lordi'ye örnek başarılarından ötürü Bronz Anahtar ödülü verdi.Konseri Finlandiya'nın 4 bir köşesinden ve diğer Avrupa ülkelerinden toplam 90 bin kişi izledi.
