IF CLAUSES
USE...
The Future Real Conditionals desciribes what you thing you will do in a specific situation in
the future It is different from other real conditional form because anlike the present or the
past,you do not know what will happen in the future.Althought this form is called ‘real
conditional’ you are Usuall imaginnig or guessing about the future.It is called ‘real’ because it
is Still possibe that the action might occur in the future.Carefully study the exzamples and
compare them to the future Unreal Conditional described bellow.
A) If…,…(ıf at the beginnig)
• If we go by bus,ıt will be cheapher.
• If you don’thurry,you will miss the rain.
• If you are hungry,have something to eat.
• If the phone rings,can you answer it,please?
…If...(ıf in the middle)
It will be cheaper if we go by bus.
You will miss the train if you don’t hurry.
I’m going to the concert if I can get a ticket.
Do you mind if I use your phone?
B) If you see Ann tomorrow … etc.
•If you see Ann tomorrow, can you ask her to phone me?
•If I’m late this evening,don’t wait for me
•What shall we do if it rains?
•If I don’t fell well tomorrow,I will stay at home.
C) If and When
Both ‘if’ and ‘when’ are used in the Future Real Conditional,but the use is different from
other real conditionals.In the Future RealConditional,’if’suggest that you do not kmow if
something will happenn or not.’When’suggest that something will definitely happen at
point;we are simply waiting for it to occur.Notice also that the Simple Future is not used in
‘if’clauses.
Example
•When you call me,I will give you the address.
•If you call me,I will give you the address.
If I go out =it is possiple that I will go out,but I’m not sure:
•A:Are oyu going out later?
•B:Perhaps.If I go out,I will close the window.
When I go out =¬I’m going out:
•A:Are you going out later?
•B:Yes,I am.When I go out,I will close the window.
•When I get home this evening,I’m going to have a shower.
•If I’m late this evening,don’t wait for me.
•We’re going to play tennis if it does’t rain.
D)If I … If we went… etc.
You can say:
• If he had the money,he would buy a car.
He would buy a car if he had the money.
•I don’t the answer.If I knew the answer,I ‘d tell you.
•It is raining, so we are not going out.We’d get wet if we went out.
•Jane lives in city.She likescities.She wouldn’t be happy if she lived in the country.
•If you didn’t have a jop,what would you do?
•I am sorry I can’t help you.I’d help you if I could.
•If we had a car,we could travel more.
E)(I) was/were
You can say:if(I/he/she/it)was or were
• It’s cold .If I were you,I’d put your coat on
• It’s not a very nice places.I wouldn’t go there if I was you.
• It would be nice if the weather were better.
